Yes, that is right. “Dil Ka Bhanwar Kare Pukar” from the film Tere Ghar Ke Saamne, featuring the “evergreen” Dev Anand and the pretty Nutan (who, by the way, is Mohnish Behl’s mom – now you know who he gets his smile from. The resemblance is uncanny).
While today’s movies (most of them, anyway) involve the actors prancing about a hundred different foreign locations – 30 seconds at a beach in Miami, the next 30 in the Alps and the remaining at some equally exotic spot, this entire song was shot inside Qutab Minar, Delhi.
While Dev Anand tries to woo his love, all Nutan does in this song is flash her smile and bat her eyelashes, and in that lies the beauty of this song sung by Rafi Saab. Who can choreograph a song today, where all the actors have to do is walk down the Minar, surrounded only by stone walls and a staircase, with not even a speck of sky around? And for close to 5 minutes, at that! One would think of the entire scene as dull and dreary, but Nutan’s sparkling eyes light up the song and Dev Anand’s charm splashed it with colour, if you know what I mean.
Anyway, I am sure you are wondering why this was the last song filmed in Qutab Minar. A friend of mine told me that he had gone to Delhi with his parents to see Qutab Minar and when they wanted to climb up, they were refused. Apparently, there was a stampede inside the Minar while a group of school kids was on tour – several were injured and a few died too. Thereafter, no one was allowed to go up and entry was permanently sealed.
So there. I personally feel though, that no one could have possibly done a better job than Dev Anand and Nutan with this song. Cheers to them!

i do agree that nowadays most of the songs are being shot at foreign locations ,though we have same many good ones at home
But one fact is Mani ratnam has never shot a single song outside the coun

i don’t know if it is true, but somewhere I heards that since the stairs were so narrow, the actual picturisation took place in the studios.

Are you serious! I didn’t know that! Although that’s a possibility. May be they shot SOME parts in the Minar. But that wouldn’t make for an interesting story at all! 😦
No Harveypam you have wrong information. Actually whole song was picturised in Qutub Minar only. You can see the shadow of camera in few places due to space crunch. It was filmed on super wide lense imported from Britain. It is mentioned in Goldie’s biography as well. Also vijay anand was famous for his song picturisation. He was a genius no one can match his direction and song picturization.
No it was not..it was picturized in replica of qutub…just imagine the size of camera those days ..and the tight space of stairs of qutub …

Yes I remember this song with Dev Aanand and Nutan in a tower, and I only now realize it was at Qutub Minar, where I went last summer – it is indeed shut because of that stampede, you can only walk around. A great pity, because it must have been super to see Delhi from the top!

When I was growing up in Delhi, we used to take all our guests to Qutb Minar and we would go up all the way to the top, or at least the third or fourth level. I went back to Delhi after nearly 40 years and found that we were not allowed inside at all! That was quite a surprise.
I just discovered your blog yesterday and am enjoying reading it, because I grew up in the era of black and white films (for the most part) and I have been out of India for the last 30 years, and it is a pleasure reliving those wonderful years again, thanks to your posts.

I’m just back to let you know that, if you’re interested, you can go read what I tried to say about that song in Qutb Minar. I’ve read somewhere that the tower had been redone in studio, though, and so perhaps in fact the location wasn’t the Minar in Delhi!

Oh this one is one of my really favourite romantic songs. Particularly one shot takes my breath away whenever I see this song and that is when Dev sahab has his face covered with Nutan’s white dupatta. Great work Neha

Hey, I was searching for some trivia on this song and found your blog. I, also found anothrt piece on IMBD, though of sharing with you. “They could not shoot the song in real Qutb Minar because it is a narrow staircase and it would be impossible to shoot the song with all the cameras rolling. And the actor’s movements could not be restricted as well. So they had to build a “Qutb Minar like” structure on the sets and the cameras are cleverly concealed.” I guess you may have to edit the title of your blog may be after 7 long years 🙂
Another trivia on this song: The guy in the song who was climbing up the stairs and embarassing the romancing couple was Vijay Anand – the director.
